Majolica (Yaroslavle)Majolica is tin-glazed earthenware, which owes this Italian sobriquet to the island of majolica. Where these ceramic wares were made. In Russia true, majolica items termed in Europe faience were known then as tsenina. Which apparently is associated with the German Zinn or tin. No wonder, as after the article is fired in a kiln. From then dipped in a glaze composed of oxides of tin. Which in combination with a potash silicate imparts a white ground, which is then decorated - or not - with enamels contrived of tinted pigments. In their manner of execution these hand-painted designs were exceedingly reminiscent of the colored lubok. A dark cherry-red was employed to contrive the general outline, which was subsequently colored with a choice of green, blue and yellow pigments. Potters were likewise famed for their figurines and statuettes, which Skillfully and wittily executed are exceedingly lifelike, displaying an amazing flair for the representation of sundry folk types.
